Internews Assesses the Post-Earthquake Media Situation in Chile

(March 16, 2010) Internews sent freelance reporter Jesse Hardman to assess the media needs of Chileans after the 8.8 earthquake on February 27. Working with a Chilean La Tercera reporter, Hardman is gathering information about access to the media, what people need to know and the status of humanitarian communication efforts.

“We actually saw and documented some things today that people should know, like the discord of the aid effort, and the extent of the damage on the coast. [The reporters in Chile need training] on how to think about humanitarian coverage,” said Hardman.

Internews is talking with Un Techo Para Chile (an NGO similar to Habitat for Humanity) about the possibility of distributing hand-crank radios to Chileans affected by the quake.  Hardman has also been in touch with other organizations such as Ushahidi,an open source project which allows users to crowdsource crisis information sent via mobile, Frontline SMS and AMARC, which represents international community-based broadcasters, to explore coordinating information efforts.

Hardman will be visiting community radio stations to assess their needs. He has brought a portable radio station kit to Chile that can be used to get a station back on the air in a short period of time.

Internews’ crisis assessment of media in Chile is possible through the support of an emergency media fund grant from the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
