Resident Journalism Advisor
Location: Dadaab, (North East) Kenya
BACKGROUND
Internews is a non-profit organization that works to improve access to information for people around the world by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies in the public interest.
Internews Network is seeking a Radio Journalism Adviser to set up and lead a project that will establish a Humanitarian Information Radio Service for Somali refugees and local people in Dadaab, North East Kenya.
In addition to overall project management, budget management and supervision of staff, the position will involve training up a team of refugees to become community radio reporters in the Dadaab camps, plus providing training for reporters at the existing community radio station in Garissa. The level of training will range from instilling basic journalistic roles, responsibilities, ethics and reporting skills to teaching more advanced program making and coverage of specialized areas such as health, humanitarian rights and gender awareness.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Strategic direction of the training program
- Conducting regular training seminars for local radio journalists and on-air staff.
- Conducting daily mentoring of local radio journalists – assisting them with the writing, research and production of stories for broadcast.
- Conducting media relations training for local civil society organisations and facilitating constructive relations between them and local journalists.
- Providing overall management of this program including budget management, technical oversight and quality assurance
- Serving as the liaison between the Internews project and other stakeholders.
- Overseeing the drafting and submission of the deliverables (work plan, annual report, etc.)
- Developing a thorough monitoring and evaluation plan that ensures achievement and reporting of results
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least five years broadcast journalism experience.
- Experience in training journalists in a developing country context
- Management experience: oversight of budget, human resources, procurement.
