Data Analyst

GENERAL FUNCTION

Internews and the World Bank Institute are working with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to produce an important study on the most effective interventions to support the sustainable development of high quality news media in developing countries. The study will work with existing data to understand where and how media development has been most successful, and the extent to which donor interventions have contributed to those outcomes.

To carry out this task the World Bank Institute and Internews are searching for a data analyst/researcher to help carry out this work. The Senior Data Analyst will be housed at the World Bank and will be responsible for gathering and analyzing data.  This is initially a 12-month position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

  • Work closely with World Bank researchers
  • Help create an online collection of data and statistics that contribute to better understanding of the impact of media development around the world and its evolution over time.
  • Perform statistical, econometric and topical analysis of data on media and development
  • Serve as the main data and quantitative analyst for the core team
  • Identify and evaluate new sources of data and analyze how this data can be used
  • Help in the design of study components using data
  • Help develop a database and website of data collected with user-friendly interface

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Excellent spoken and written English
  • Strong analytic writing skills in a concise, well-structured style
  • Knowledge of the news media and understanding of basic media development issues helpful, but not required
  • Proficiency in using data and statistics and ability to write clearly about quantitative and economics subjects
  • Proficiency in at least one major language other than English will be an asset
  • Ability to thrive in a multicultural working environment and juggle multiple responsibilities under sometime complex and competing deadlines.
  • Ability to drive and contribute to team results and create positive, productive atmosphere for other team members; flexibility and ability to collaborate a must
  • Strong background in micro- and macroeconomics, business, or political science.  Masters degree in economics preferred.   
  • Creative, nimble thinker grounded in strong analytical capacities
  • Strong quantitative skills and ability to interpret raw data using major software packages including Excel and STATA.
  • Proficiency in producing clear visual representations of data using various software tools including Excel and Powerpoint
