Senior International Advisor

Background:
Internews® Network is an international non-profit working to improve access to information for people around the world by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies. Internews' programs are built on the conviction that providing people with access to vibrant, diverse news and information empowers them to make their voices heard and to participate effectively in their communities.
Since 2003, Internews has worked to develop independent media in Afghanistan. Internews works closely with local media organizations, including Pajhwok Afghan News, a wire service; Nai Supporting Open Media in Afghanistan, a media training NGO; and Salaam Watandar, a daily satellite news and current affairs program. These organizations have developed strong programs in their respective areas, and are looking towards future sustainability. As such, they need assistance in planning and improving their financial sustainability; and improving the quality of their management of training and other activities.
Essential Duties
The Senior Advisor will be provided with the support of a translator and interpreter in order to effectively carry out his/her responsibilities. Reporting directly to Internews Afghanistan Country Director, the Senior Advisor will:
- Work collaboratively with Internews’ partner agencies in Afghanistan, such as Pajhwok Afghan News, Nai, Salaam Watandar and others to develop marketing and business development strategies, write business development plans and manage business development funds. These strategies will address existing and new opportunities from aid donors as well as private sector and advertising opportunities.
- Assist Internews and partners in planning, improving, evaluating and managing training programs for media personnel. This will include training and mentoring of trainers, developing work plans for training programs, designing data collection for training feedback, and managing staff development.
- Provide input to program development, general management issues, and other areas upon request.
- Prepare monthly progress reports in USAID format; other reports as required
- Advising Internews units and partners in the following areas:
- Business Development planning for media organizations
- Media training organization structure and management
Qualifications
- At least 5 years experience in media business development and marketing
- Considerable experience in designing and/or managing a training strategy, department or organization
- At least 10 years experience working as an advisor with local organizations
- Excellent skills in working with local partners and staff
- Masters degree or Tertiary qualification in a relevant field
