Background:

Internews® Network is an international media development organization based in Arcata, CA and Washington, DC whose mission is to empower local media worldwide to give people the news and information they need, the ability to connect, and the means to make their voices heard.

Since 2002, Internews has set up 33 independent radio stations owned and operated by Afghan organizations (four of the stations are run by women), with plans to build 9 more; provided equipment and training to local journalists; produced independent radio content with local journalists; and established a satellite distribution system for radio programming that reaches a majority of the population. In 2005, Internews’ training and production activities focused on elections coverage. In September 2005, a training centre was set up in collaboration with Nai, a local Afghan media development NGO and a member of Internews International, offering training in a variety of subjects to media professionals from around the country. In addition, Internews Europe works with government, private sector and civil society to promote the adoption of legal and regulatory frameworks in Afghanistan that will support the growth of an open, affordable and user-controlled Internet.

General Function:

Internews Network is currently seeking a Resident Advisor, Nai Program for its Kabul, Afghanistan office.  The selected candidate will be responsible for mentoring the Nai management team, (a media training and development organization), and radio program production unit Salam Watandar.

The Resident Advisor will provide high-level guidance to the Executive Director (and other Nai staff) in long-term organizational and business development, and will assist with complex implementation tasks of the 09-10 cost extension. The Advisor will provide Internews management with a roadmap for future engagement with Nai.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Undertake a review of current Nai operations in partnership with the Nai Executive Director and work closely to assist Nai to implement recommendations, drawing on other Internews specialist staff as relevant.
  • Support the implementation of Nai activities under the 09-10 cost extension.
  • Assist Nai to develop new proposals and business opportunities within the contract period.
  • Assist Nai to develop a financially and operationally feasible longer-term mission plan consistent with their goals and with Internews’ goals in Afghanistan; provide a roadmap for Nai and Internews to implement this plan and make progress on implementation as far as possible.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least 5 years experience in organizational development in a developing countries,
  • Substantial experience in media development and a working understanding of the media industry
  • Demonstrable training and mentoring skills
  • Possess organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent skills in working with local partners and staff
  • Ability to use own initiative, common sense and act quickly on issues.
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field
