Country Director - Thailand and Region
Location: Chiang Mai, Thailand

Background:

Internews® Network is an international non-profit organization working to improve access to information for people around the world by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies. Internews' programs are built on the conviction that providing people with access to vibrant, diverse news and information empowers them to make their voices heard and to participate effectively in their communities.

General Function:

The Country Director provides oversight in ensuring that grants received by Internews Network to help independent broadcast media in the field office are properly executed and reported. Also provides oversight for Internews operations in both Chiang Mai and region.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead development and implementation of a program with a broad set of media and ICT-related activities in the region including trainings, small grants programming and other projects
  • Liaise with representatives of sources of funding for Internews’ work
  • Fulfill all reporting requirements for a diverse set of US, European and private donors.
  • Represent Internews before donors, government officials, partner NGOs, to media community, at conferences, presentations, briefings.
  • Strategize new directions for Internews to help independent media, writing up concept papers, proposals, work plans, strategic review papers
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of independent news media in the region of responsibility, presentation of information to donors, partners, etc.
  • Regular visits to local media outlets media to conduct research and maintain contact and develop new projects
  • Maintain close contact with other Internews managers in the region
  • Encourage news media organizations to: do more news programming, adopt ethical journalism practices and revamp management techniques for business advancement.
  • Encourage safe use of IT by journalists and media organizations
  • Receive cash for Internews Field Office through local bank account
  • Request wire transfers from Main Office Accounting for operating expenses
  • Ensure compliance with grantors’ rules and regulations (e.g. buy-America, fly-America)
  • Manage and coordinate with a project director and operations manager who supervise employees in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Interviewing, hiring, and training employees and consultants; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • Visit local media outlets in Thai provinces as well as in the region to assess quality of programming supported by project funds.
  • Manage the maintenance and regular updating of information security for program including backing up program information for entire office and ensuring that copies of information are stored off-site.
  • Ensure compliance with safety and security procedures by staff and beneficiaries of the Internews office; oversee security of office
  • Managing the development and maintenance of a training database for all graduates of Internews’ country and regional training program and production grants.
  • Oversight of large subgrants to key media partners implementing projects; oversight of several grant programs to media groups, as well as to journalists.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain a broad network of relationships in a multi-cultural and politically sensitive environment
  • High computer and internet literacy (early adopter of new open source productivity software and applications)
  • Familiarity and compliance with use of secure IT practices
  • Fluent English
  • Excellent writing skills and experience writing & reporting for grants (especially USAID)
  • Aptitude with mechanical and electronic equipment, in particular, digital audio and video recording equipment
  • Journalism education or experience
  • Experience managing an office with 10 to 15 people
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Training experience preferred
  • Some accounting experience
  • Relevant university degree
  • Relevant language skills
