Background:

Internews® Network is an international non-profit organization working to improve access to information for people around the world by fostering independent media and promoting open communications policies. Internews' programs are built on the conviction that providing people with access to vibrant, diverse news and information empowers them to make their voices heard and to participate effectively in their communities.

General Function:

The Information Officer will contribute to the Internews Network emergency response and coordination program in Haiti under the CDAC (Communications with Disaster Affected Communities) mandate. Under the supervision of the Humanitarian Response Coordinator, the Information Officer will serve a number of organizational objectives through gathering, managing, analyzing, synthesizing and disseminating a wide range of information and data from all sectors, sources and stakeholders in the Haiti emergency response environment.   

The primary purpose of the position is to stimulate and inform an ongoing exchange of information between humanitarian organizations, media assistance organizations, local media outlets and the affected population. The Information Officer will facilitate and promote the importance of this information exchange amongst the various stakeholders so that:

  • resources can be most effectively deployed to meet the needs of local media outlets
  • appropriate platforms are developed to cater to the information needs of all Haitians
  • humanitarian programs and activities are responsive to the needs of affected people, and are well understood by them.                                                

SCOPE OF WORK:

  • Work closely with CDAC team members to track, collate and circulate project information (eg: media assessments, audience research, media monitoring results, training and production outputs)
  • Liaise regularly with representatives of international media assistance organizations to track and collate information about their activities, available resources,  and outputs such as media assessments, audience research, media monitoring results, training and production outputs
  • Liaise regularly with local journalists associations and other relevant civil society organizations to track and collate information that, together with the above, provides a comprehensive view of the Haitian media and information landscape
  • Liaise regularly with representatives of humanitarian organizations to keep them updated on the activities, strategies and available resources of the media assistance community, and to promote the capacity of local media as a channel for communicating with the affected populations.
  • Source and circulate public information from a wide range of relevant organizations and actors (wire services, internet etc)
  • Help prepare reports/proposals (write, edit, proof, revise) and assessments as needed.
  • Prepare correspondence and reports from local partners, conferences and discussion panels
  • Write reports for primary donors in coordination with CoP
  • Design, develop and produce communications tools and liaise with public and media on program activities as needed
  • Carry out research as assigned and in support of ongoing projects and new initiatives
  • Represent CDAC at various meetings and events as needed

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • *Fluent English and French language and writing skills required*
  • 3+ years programmatic experience or relevant advanced degree
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Proven ability to work in and articulate development sector goals and priorities
  • Proficient in MS Office, experience managing databases, particularly Microsoft Access and mapping software.
  • Experience report and assessment writing, creating public information products
  • Creative, highly comfortable and competent with software and online tools, attentive to detail.
  • Local language skills (Creole) highly preferred
