The dictator's diktat

January 13, 2008

It is being seen as the latest measure to silence dissenting voices in Pakistan. After Pakistan President Prevez Musharraf blacked out one of the country's leading television channel for speaking against him, he has now passed a new law that makes cyber terrorism, among other online crimes, punishable with nothing less than death or life in prison.

The move is likely to cause lot of pressure on the bloggers and the citizens of the country.  The internet and access to website has already been restricted. This for many civil society organisation is a draconian law, which is trying to restrict freedom of expression in the country that has already been under pressure because of long years of Military rule.

Justifying the severe punishment under the law, Sayed Hussain Amar Jaffrey, Project Director, National Research Centre for Cyber Crime said:"The move is aimed to allow healthy minded people to use internet, while discourage criminals and terrorist to use the network."

However, what has irked civil rights groups are the draconian measures that come with the legislation. Under the law, an officer can walk into any house, confiscate the computer and make an arrest. Moreover, he is not required to give any explanation."

Commenting on the new law, Adnan Rehmat, Country Director, Internews said:"Just to hit out against few dozen suspects, who may or most probably will not use internet to do what they do, is not the way to go about it. It will adversely affect how people access their information, how they express their opinion and will also affect how people inform themselves at large."

For a man, who's already facing criticism within and outside for human rights violations, the this latest law is going to just add to the growing anarchy that Pakistan is witnessing.
