Internews Russia Suspends Operations Following Raid

Manana AslamazyanAfter Russian police seized documents and computer servers from the Moscow headquarters of Educated Media Foundation (formerly Internews Russia) on April 18 in connection with a criminal investigation of its president, Manana Aslamazyan, the Russian NGO announced that it is suspending operations.

The Educated Media Foundation, Internews International and Internews Network have released statements and several media outlets have published articles about the situation. Over 2000 Russian journalists have also written an open letter to President Vladimir Putin in support of Aslamazyan and Educated Media Foundation. (More)

Local Voices - Improving Reporting on HIV/AIDS

audioInternews' Local Voices project, which trains journalists, talk show hosts and deejays how to report on HIV/AIDS effectively, has released Stories of Courage, a CD of radio stories produced by journalists and producers from Kenya, India, Nigeria and Ethiopia on topics ranging from refugee camps and HIV testing to education, adoption and memory books for children orphaned by AIDS.

Indian women with colored powder on her faceOn the Indian spring festival of Holi in Chennai, twenty women living with HIV removed masks from their faces and burnt them, symbolically ending their silence about the violence they have suffered because they are HIV-positive. "We are breaking this silence today," declared Padmavathy, one of the women at the event. "We will raise our voices against the violence faced by us and our children in court if need be."

An Internews documentary titled My Dead Husband’s Land had its United States premiere in Austin, Texas at the Austin Woman’s Film, Music and Literary Festival on April 28th. Produced by Internews' Senior Health Journalism Advisor Mia Malan, My Dead Husband’s Land tells the story of a 25-year old HIV-positive Kenyan widow, Betty Tom, and the transformation her community undergoes as a result of her battle for human rights.
