When Sara Farid started working with Internews on a Pakistani women’s radio program, Meri Awaz Suno (“Hear My Voice”), she didn't have any experience working with radio. Now she has a great passion for radio. (More) |
January 4, 2007 Dear Friend, On New Year's Day, I found myself sitting at home with my wirelessly connected laptop, reading my email and the New York Times online. I did some quick Google searches for items of interest. Lying next to me were a dozen magazines, most of which I will never have time to read. I also rarely have time to read blogs or listen to podcasts. I have information wealth to spare. Meanwhile, a girl arrives hungry and thirsty at a refugee camp in eastern Chad, after walking for days from her torched home in neighboring Darfur. She finds herself in a strange new country, and has no idea what the future holds. She has no access to newspapers, television, the Internet, or even a telephone. The girl is information-poor. I can only imagine how life-changing it is for her to tune into a community radio station established by Internews, and hear a voice in her own dialect reporting on the distribution of food and other essentials in the refugee camps, discussing the risks that girls and women face in collecting firewood, and sharing services available to refugees dealing with grief and trauma. As Internews celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, I believe that Internews’ mission – to bring access to information and a voice to everyone – remains among the most potent leverage points for positive social change around the world.
