A Day in the Life of Internews 2006 |

Wayne Sharpe, Country Director, Internews Indonesia
Today I flew from Jakarta to Yogyakarta, the site of an earthquake last May that killed 6,000 and left whole communities homeless. Internews is conducting an emergency media response for survivors of the earthquake, by establishing an emergency radio broadcaster and helping to rebuild community radio stations in the disaster zone. In Yogya, I visited the site of the emergency AM station, where technicians were digging the pit for a new broadcast tower. The transmitter will arrive from nearby Surabaya tomorrow and we will be on the air in three days. Along with colleagues, I met with the UN-OCHA team to gather their messages about tetanus precautions and other concerns for people living exposed for so many months, that we will produce as PSAs at local commercial stations and put on the air at as many stations as we can. The day ended with the news that a tsunami had hit a few hundred kilometers down the coast from Yogya, killing at least 100 people. |
