As a result of the war in Afghanistan and renewed efforts to secure the Afghan-Pakistan border, we are witnessing the largest investments in US history in overseas communications initiatives and media programs. US government- funded strategic communications, Pakistani government deregulation of the broadcast sector, Afghanistan’s first media moguls, and an explosion in mobile phone access are just a few of the factors that are contributing to massive media growth media across the crisis-hit region. Among these many efforts, assistance to locally owned, independent media initiatives aiming to expand access to information among local communities is also changing Afghan and Pakistan societies. Penetrating some of the most remote corners of Pakistan and Afghanistan, including the isolated tribal regions, many of them utilize and expand the newest community radio and online media markets. But the escalating war and humanitarian crisis has heightened the urgent need for a proper mass media infrastructure and access to information for people in local languages. The role of marginalized voices, including youth and women in society is a continuing challenge to that success. Panelists shared their personal perspectives and experiences working on these issues in heart of the conflict in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
