On April 6, 1994, Rwandan President Juvenal
Habyarimana was returning from Tanzania where he had been meeting
with international leaders. He had agreed at the meeting to speed
up the transition to democracy in his country. On the way to Kigali,
he was killed when his plane was shot down.
