Inside InternewsTSUNAMI RESPONSE: Internews quickly mobilized to help the first emergency radio station get on the air in Banda Aceh, the capital of the province of Aceh in Indonesia, which was devastated by the December 26 tsunami. An Internews team flew to Aceh with two suitcase radio stations plus other equipment to donate to local radio stations. Funding for this effort came from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
MEDIA HISTORY IN PALESTINE: The Palestinian presidential elections on January 9 made media history as Amin Media Network established the first ad hoc national radio network to provide in-depth coverage of the elections for the West Bank and Gaza, under an Internews Europe project funded by the European Union. INTERNEWS ETHIOPIA: Internews has established an office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to help local media cover HIV/AIDS effectively. This is an expansion of Internews’ Local Voices project, which began in Kenya and Nigeria with funding from USAID. ALGERIA INTERNET REFORM: Internews has been awarded a grant from the US State Department’s Middle East Partnership Initiative to promote Internet policy reform in Algeria. The goal of the project is to promote open, affordable Internet access to as many people as possible. |
