Editor's Note

Access to information is fundamental to empowerment. Six years ago Internews recognized that, with increasing digital convergence, we needed to expand the scope of our work from supporting independent media to ensuring people's access to information Focus: Information Accessthrough whatever technological means they choose. When a piece of news can reach you as easily via a TV news program, an Internet posting, or a cell phone text message, the message transcends the medium.

This issue of Internews Report focuses on Internews' work expanding access to information and communications technologies (ICT). Stories outline Internews' projects promoting e-government—increasing transparency by getting government information and services online. Other articles feature our work for an affordable and user-controlled Internet in countries as diverse as Algeria, Vietnam, and Armenia. Why? Because getting people around the world connected to the information they need enables them to take charge of their lives and to participate fully in the global society.
