Internews Report - Summer 2007 - Environmental Journalism

Editor's Note

Climate change. Deforestation. Species loss. These profound threats to life on this planet require an educated and engaged public to catalyze political leaders into action. Focus: Environmental JournalismYet in the developing world, home to 80% of the global population as well as the world's fastest-growing economies, environmental awareness is sketchy, and environmental issues tend to be underreported and oversimplified.

This issue of Internews Report focuses on Internews' work fostering environmental reporting, particularly in the developing world. An interview with James Fahn, Executive Director of Internews' Earth Journalism Network (EJN), explores the particular challenges of environmental journalism in less developed countries. EJN's daily work in places like China and Vietnam is described in articles and a photo essay. Meanwhile, Internews radio and TV programs around the world give airtime to environmental stories told by and for the local people who are most affected. These journalists speak for the trees, the animals, and the earth itself.
