Young Afghan Women Find Self-Expression with Digital Storytelling
Part of InternewsNext, a series highlighting 30 youth-led media initiatives.
Personal and often difficult stories, of family loss, struggle for education, and arranged marriages have shaped the experiences of many young women in Afghanistan.
As participants in a Take Back the Tech! training this May in Kabul, several young women found a new opportunity for self-expression through digital storytelling. Through short videos now available online, the women narrated their stories and captured their ideas visually, through drawings and pictures.
The results are a glimpse into the varied lives of young women from Herat, Kandahar, Kabul and more, including Afghan Daughter, Freedom, and My Burqa Story.
The training was held in conjunction with Bytes for All and APC WNSP, and was supported by the Afghanistan Media Development and Empowerment Project (AMDEP), which is implemented by Internews and funded by USAID.
