Press ReleasesTalk Show Host Training in Kenya Gets Results
(November 4, 2003) A young girl who was being abused by her father was able to get help after tuning into a talk show hosted by Sandra Ndonye, a participant in an Internews Kenya workshop. The workshop trained students in the production of HIV/AIDS talk show programs, including interviewing, recording and scripting techniques. Sandra Ndonye is a presenter and producer at Metro FM, KBC's youth station. She attended the 10 day workshop in September 2003 along with six other talk show hosts. The workshop was followed by two days of individual training during which Ndonye chose to produce a show on HIV/AIDS and youth. As part of the show, Ndonye interviewed an HIV-positive teenager who had been abused by family members and who sometimes worked as a sex worker. Internews worked with Ndonye to develop interview questions and with the technical aspects of recording the interview. After the show was aired, calls started to stream in. One was from a young girl whose father was abusing her. Ndonye gave her the name and number of an organization to contact and promised to go with her. As a result the father was arrested, found guilty and is now jailed. "The Internews course and the story you’ve helped me with, taught me so much about the difference that media can make in this epidemic!" said Ndonye. "If I did not have that story on, the girl would never have phoned. I've realized the power of putting human voices on air that talk about real life experiences of HIV!" Internews Kenya is supported by a grant from the United States Agency for International Development. |
