Internews Hosts Jordanian Radio Professionals in Washington, DC

Jordanian radio professionals visit the facilities of National Public Radio (NPR) during a tour hosted by Internews.

(August 21, 2006) Six Jordanian radio professionals who aim to launch an independent radio station just completed a visit to Washington, DC to gain a deeper understanding of the radio industry. Hosted by Internews Network, the journalists and managers spent three action-packed days touring radio stations including National Public Radio and American University's WAMU.

The visit was part of the International Journalism and Media Management Training Program, organized by Internews and Western Kentucky University, with funding from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL). Back in Jordan, Internews will help the team to produce 24 15-minute radio shows focusing on social issues that they will market locally, regionally and internationally. The tem aspires to launch an independent radio station in Jordan.

The six member delegation toured the facilities of National Public Radio (NPR) where they watched a live airing of the “All Things Considered” Show, met with the producers of "The Diane Rehm Show" at American University’s Radio Station WAMU, and met with Dr. James Zogby, the founder and President of the Arab American Institute.  The team also visited Voice of America.  

Of the tour of the radio stations, Nour Dajani, Sales and Marketing Officer said, “Our itinerary was outstanding and I say confidently that if it wasn’t for Internews, I wouldn’t have had the chance to build an in-depth knowledge about radio stations in the United States.”

The group visited His Excellency Ambassador Karim Kawar at the Jordanian Embassy, as well as Mr. Ramiro Martinez and Mr. Joseph Bargouth, Middle East and North Africa program officers at DRL.

Deema Shahin, Managing Officer, said, “Meeting with the funders (State Department) made us feel more confident of what we are doing, and gave us the sense of the transparency of the process and thus further trust in it.”
 
The team consisted of Ms. Deema Shahin, Managing Officer, Ms. Noor Dajani, Sales and Marketing Officer, Ms. Hiba Aloul, Journalist, Ms. Noor Saleh, Journalist, Mr. Mohammad Maaytiah, Journalists and Mr. Karmel Mahmoud, Graphic Designer.
