Press ReleasesRadio Program Focuses on Peace and Reconstruction in Aceh, Indonesia
(September 18, 2006) Internews Indonesia’s national bi-weekly radio program, Suara Negeriku (Voice of My Country) is now available for download on a new web site. The program covers the changes in governance and progress towards decentralization across Indonesia. It is produced in cooperation with local radio stations. The show, which began airing in January 2006, also addresses development issues, and profiles innovators in education, health promotion, environmental protection, and conflict mediation. Suara Negeriku tells the stories of individuals at the community level and explores the challenges, successes, and failures, all in the context of Indonesians working hard to make a difference. Suara Negeriku is distributed on CD to 160 radio stations across the country, reaching an audience of several million. It is also now being offered to audiences via the Internet as streaming audio or an audio download on Internews Indonesia’s new web site. The program is part of “Building on the Foundations,” a two-year media support project in Indonesia through which Internews provides training to radio and print journalists, produces the national radio program Suara Negeriku, and supports Indonesia's independent broadcast regulatory body. “Building on the Foundations” is funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and is featured on the new Internews Indonesia web site. “When Internews began its work in Indonesia in 1999, we researched using the Internet to transfer radio programs to our partner radio stations across the country, but connectivity was rare and unreliable,” Internews Country Director Wayne Sharpe said. “Conditions have improved since then, and we hope to reach a whole new online audience including any Indonesian anywhere who is interested in quality radio journalism.”FOR MORE INFORMATION: Wayne Sharpe, Internews Indonesia Country Director |
