Press ReleasesInternews launches ‘Jazba-e-Tameer’ - a photographic exhibition on the role of media and communications in disaster zones
(September 22, 2006 – Berne, Switzerland) The headquarters of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is hosting an exhibition of world class photographer, Mark Edwards, of the work of Internews in emergency response support at its headquarters in Berne. The exhibition, named Jazba-e-Tameer (The Desire to Rebuild) after a daily hour long radio programme of that name, features in depth Internews’ work in the earthquake zones of Pakistan to support the information needs of affected communities. The exhibition explains how the Jazba-e-Tameer radio programme became not only a platform through which local people in the zones were able to express their needs and concerns, but also a driver of government and international relief efficiency and responsiveness. The exhibition documents, for instance, how local corruption in the zones was stamped out following Jazba broadcasts. It also covers the work of Internews in Indonesia after the tsunami and the Yogyakarta earthquake. The Director of the SDC and the Pakistani Ambassador to Switzerland launched the Jazba-e-Tameer exhibition as part of the 40th anniversary celebration of development cooperation between the two countries. Internews plans to show the exhibition to policy-makers at the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID) in London and at the World Congress for Communications for Development (WCCD) in Rome.
