United States Institute of Peace
Center of Innovation on Media and
Conflict
Cordially invite you to the Working Group Meeting on:
The Role of Media in Conflict
Friday, May 4th, 2007 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
This will be the first meeting
in a series of meetings the Institute will organize to analyze
the role that media play in conflict prevention, conflict management
and post-conflict reconstruction.
The first meeting will focus on the
role of media in conflict prevention. In some crisis media has
been seen as the instigator of conflict whereas in others they have played
a positive role in hindering conflict. The objective of the working group
is to bring together media experts, practitioners, and academics to discuss
the relationship between media and conflict, identify lessons learned
and gaps that exist.
With:
John Langlois, Chairman of the Working
Group
Since arriving at USAID’s Office of Transition Initiatives
to become the Senior Media Advisor in early 2002, John Langlois
has been responsible for media program design and technical oversight
in new and ongoing country operations. Country programs have included
Afghanistan, Iraq, Liberia, West Bank/Gaza, Sudan, Congo, and Bolivia.
OTI is active in countries in political transition, and occasionally,
in countries dealing with humanitarian crises. John began his work in
the sector at WNUR-FM at Northwestern University, then helped establish
and manage programming for a rural radio station in Liberia as a Peace
Corps Volunteer from 1985-1987. He returned to Liberia in 1993 and remained
until 1999, where for part of that time he built and ran a radio
production studio for Search for Common Ground.

Former USIP fellow Mr. Kurspahic was the editor-in-chief of the

newly acquired independence, and production of daily publications without
interruption in 1992-94 while the city was under siege. Mr. Kurspahic
was awarded The Courage in Journalism Award in 1992. He was one of the
two editors named International Editor of the Year in 1993 by the World
Press Review for their "bravery, tenacity, and dedication to the
principles of journalism."
Steven Livingston
Mr. Livingston
is Associate Professor of Political Communication and International
Affairs at The George Washington University and the director of the School
of Media and Public Affairs' (SMPA) Political Communication Program.

and international affairs. He is particularly interested in the
role of information technology and media in national security policymaking.
