Support Journalism Under Attack in Russia
The Educated Media Foundation (EMF, formerly known as Internews Russia)
was forced to suspend its work following an April 18, 2007 eleven-hour
raid on its Moscow headquarters. Police seized financial documents and
computer servers, supposedly under a criminal investigation of EMF president
Manana Aslamazyan triggered by her failure to fill out a customs declaration. Over 2000 Russian journalists signed
a letter to President Putin in support of Aslamazyan and her organization,
and numerous news articles, editorials, and statements of support both
Russian and international have called the government's actions excessive.
