(September 14, 2007) Through strategic alliances and journalism training, Internews China is working to improve the quality and depth of health information received by Chinese citizens. The Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GBC) has invited Internews China to become a member of the steering committee for its China Media Partnership project. Internews is the first NGO (non-governmental organization) to participate in the partnership whose primary focus will be to deliver HIV/AIDS messages using public service announcements, program content, targeted special events, and collaboration with journalists. The aim is to produce innovative, groundbreaking and sustainable media initiatives to reduce stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS in China. GBC is an alliance of over 200 international companies dedicated to combating AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis by harnessing the business sector’s unique skills and expertise. As part of the project, Internews China has proposed to offer training of journalists in mainstreaming HIV/AIDS stories. Public health is an important part of Internews’ work in China and of Internews in general. Through Internews’ global program on health journalism that focuses on HIV/AIDS, avian flu and other issues, journalists from Asia and Africa are given professional training and expertise. In China Internews has incorporated public health issues in its legal training, mostly in the areas of plastic surgery and the risks of electromagnetic, air and water pollution. In August, at the request of UNDP China, Internews China presented on HIV/AIDS prevention and new media platforms to an audience of top Chinese media representatives, including MTV China, and several United Nations agencies, Chinese government agencies and NGOs. Actor Pu Cunxin, who is China’s HIV/AIDS Goodwill Ambassador also attended. |
