Press ReleasesKnight Foundation Supports Internews’ Worldwide Network of Journalists(April 16, 2008) The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has made a three-year grant to Internews Network that will establish an international network of media professionals. Internews trains over 9,000 journalists, station managers and other media professionals each year, in topics ranging from the technical aspects of radio news production to investigative reporting. This grant will establish an online alumni network of these journalists, and will enable members to further their professional development via online journalism training. The journalists will be linked to digital journalism education web sites such as the Poynter Institute’s News University. They will be encouraged to explore resources such as the International Center for Journalists web site, with its array of journalism fellowships, and the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, offering distance education for Latin American and Caribbean journalists. Knight program alumni will be invited to mentor and coach journalists over the web. “This generous support from the Knight Foundation will allow journalists around the world to deepen their professional skills and to meet the challenges and opportunities of new digital media,” said Internews President David Hoffman. “The result will be stronger reporting and a more informed and educated public.” Internews Network is an international non-profit organization that works to empower people everywhere with the news and information they need, the ability to connect and the means to make their voices heard. Since 1982, Internews has worked in 70 countries worldwide. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation promotes journalism excellence worldwide and invests in the vitality of U.S. communities where the Knight brothers owned newspapers. Since 1950, Knight Foundation has made nearly $400 million in grants to support journalism. |
