Four Staff of Internews Network Injured in Pakistan Blast

(June 9, 2009) Four staff members of Internews Network were injured today in a bomb blast outside a hotel in Pakistan.

One staff member was treated for an injury, and others sustained minor cuts and bruises. All other Internews staffers and consultants in the country are accounted for.

The powerful explosion outside the hotel killed at least 11 people and wounded 55, media are reporting.

Initial news reports say that gunmen opened fire on guards at the hotel and then drove a vehicle loaded with explosives at a security checkpoint.

Internews has worked to support local media in Pakistan since 2003, training journalists and supporting new radio and TV initiatives. The nonprofit organization has worked in over 70 countries worldwide to empower local media to provide people with the news and information they need and the means to make their voices heard.
