Ninety young people from around the world met at a summit in Johannesburg to develop media tools for combatting violence against women.

(July 14, 2010) Manning Up is about taking responsibility. In sport, to “man up” is to act defensively. That’s what 90 young people working to achieve a safer world for women worldwide committed to during a weeklong summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. The youth summit, arranged by ManUp, brought together people from gender organizations in Soccer World Cup countries in Africa, Europe, the Americas and Australia. They were tasked with developing a toolkit for change.

Executive Director and Co-Founder of the ManUp campaign, Jimmie Briggs, told delegates they were now part of a global family of like-minded peers, supported by a greater number of institutions and individuals determined to witness their success.

By partnering with like-minded organizations, ManUp offered the participants a range of tools to counter gender based violence. Using music, hip hop, graffiti, social media and traditional media, they learned how to have impact with their message by reaching out into communities to create an environment where women would be secure.

A participant from the US, Angela Fernandez, said that the media “is the most powerful tool right now for young people” in addressing this issue and that the event made her think more about how she “packages her message.”

During the summit, Internews Kenya Country Director, Ida Jooste, led sessions on:

  • How gender organizations create media impact while securing the safety of survivors of violence
  • “Going live with your message,” an enactment providing participants with tips for live radio and television interviews
  • Creating an understanding of the different needs and approaches of civil society organizations and the media – the delegates learned how to break through perception barriers to foster  meaningful relationships with journalists to ultimately achieve greater satisfaction with media coverage.
