Where We WorkSub-Saharan AfricaNigeriaThe ENHANSE/Internews Journalism Development Program works to increase the quality and quantity of news and information on policy issues related to HIV/AIDS, child survival, reproductive health and basic education. All activities are meant to equip journalists and media managers to cover specific policy issues right from the initiation to implementation stages. Journalists have been constantly engaged to identify the challenges and successes of initiating and implementing policies through roundtables and discussions mediated by Internews. Trained and mentored journalists initiate bottom to top input for policy formulation and legislation by bringing in the voices of people into policy discussions in their news stories and talk shows.
The stories and programs under the program aired/published have brought several policies to the court of public opinion. As a result of these efforts seven ENHANSE/Internews trained journalists were honored during the December 2008 Red Ribbon Award for excellence in HIV reporting. The awards are an annual event organized by Journalists Against AIDS (JAAIDS) Nigeria and its partners. In addition to this, over the last year 36 stories have been printed or aired as a result of our trainings throughout Nigeria on health and policy. |
"I had to learn the skills of a good reporter; I am still learning. I do not really know how I got here from being a graduate of Chemical Engineering to a journalist whose reports are winning free trips to different parts of the world. I owe all these to Internews. This is just the beginning for me. I am more determined than ever before to do more." – Uzomba Chinyere Joy, reporter and producer for HOT-FM in Abuja, Nigeria |
