Where We WorkSub-Saharan AfricaSudanThrough the construction of a network of vibrant community radio stations, and accompanied by intensive and innovative technical and journalism training, Internews is helping to inform and educate hundreds of thousands of people in Southern Sudan’s most remote regions. To date, Internews Sudan has built four fully-equipped FM community radio stations: Nhomlaau FM (“Freedom” in Dinka) in Maluakon, Naath FM (“Citizen” in Nuer) in Leer, Radio Al Mujtama Fi Kurmuk (“Kurmuk Community Radio” in Arabic) and Voice of Community in Kauda. The stations have a broadcast range of about 70kms each, and are on air 6 days a week, a minimum of 8 hours per day, in at least 10 different languages. Two more stations are currently being built this year in Turalei (Warrap State) and Renk (Greater Upper Nile). Internews aims to help create the foundation for a peaceful and democratic Sudan through the airwaves - by providing increased citizen awareness of and access to relevant political, development and topical issues, such as the CPA, Interim Constitution, elections, gender, health, education, agriculture and even local music. The community stations provide an open forum for dialogue and debate at the local level, giving members of civil society organizations and the public alike a voice in creating awareness and advocating for issues of their concern. The project is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). |
"Internews has given the community a tool to help people fully participate without discrimination, to take part in decision making. This is the power of community media. It shows we are doing something, that the community really owns this radio." – Lonya Bany Banak, radio station coordinator of Naath FM in Leer, Sudan |
