The Liberia Media Development Activity collaborated with the Local Empowerment for Government Inclusion and Transparency Activity to hold an intensive two-day Seminar on Liberia’s Freedom of Information (FOI) Law.
The focus of the seminar was to familiarize public officials, civil society, journalists, and representatives of local communities on how to use the FOI as an effective tool for transparency, governance, and citizens’ empowerment.
“The training has enlightened me about some things I was doing out of ignorance.” said Philip Flomo, Mayor of Karnplay City in Nimba County.
“From this training, I’ve realized that somewhere and somehow, some information has been lacking in public, and we are the ones responsible for providing them. Now I know that we are required to provide public information, and now I understand what will happen if we as public officials sit on such information – it will instigate suspicion, promote gossip and mistrust, and will affect our democracy.”
