Who’s really shaping your world view?

When our media is open to abuse and manipulation, so are we…

In the wake of 2016’s political upheavals, the dark side of the information revolution began to hit home.

People in western democracies woke up to the fact that the media and information systems we have long relied on are increasingly fragile, at risk of being overwhelmed by fake news, propaganda and hate speech.

While it can seem like we are powerless to act, this is far from the truth. And Internews is uniquely placed to lead the fightback.

For 35 years, Internews has been working to support safe access to trusted information in some of the most world’s most remote and dangerous places; countries where fake news and no news are endemic and where people have given their lives to get at the truth.

We’re an astute and effective charity that has helped to build informed societies and to keep freedom of expression alive in places it would otherwise have died. But now we need your help.

It’s time to fight back against fake news

Internews is currently hard at work in 70 countries, training and supporting journalists, pushing for freedom of information rights, developing technologies to combat censorship…and so much more.

  • In the Ukraine, we are helping teenagers to discern real news from fake news by enabling then to better assess what the media is telling them.
  • In Afghanistan, we are helping to light up information dark spots by supporting women-owned, women-led radio stations.
  • In Myanmar, we are helping to combat hate speech and sectarian violence by delivering training to dispel myths about different communities and giving journalists the skills to identify fake content.

This work can be difficult and dangerous. And it can only succeed with the ingenuity and courage of our partners on the ground and the help of supporters who care about the truth and are prepared to stand up for it. Are you one of them?

The more we stand up for truth, the stronger it becomes

Only 13% of the world currently enjoys a free press

Right now, only 13% of the world enjoys a free press. And with ‘fake news’ and ‘post truth’ becoming part of our vocabulary, we can’t afford to be complacent.

If we allow powerful forces to snuff out independent voices, as they have tried to do in Afghanistan, DRC, Kenya, Myanmar, South Sudan, Ukraine and in countless other places, our understanding of what’s really going on in the world and our ability to make informed decisions will be compromised.

Please make a stand against this today – by making a gift to Internews.
